Learning to Die by Living- A Yearlong Exploration of Life Without Fear of Death
Begins January, 3 2025
Course Details
There are few certainties in life, but one of them is that it ends. All of us will die at some point in the future. You, and everyone else you have ever met, will one day die. This fact can seem dark and unsettling, leading many of us to experience fear if we reflect on it enough. But what does it mean to die, and is being dead really a bad thing? The philosophy of death and dying urges us to think critically about our ideas around these topics. In this course, we will explore the nature of death and dying; the ethics and politics of human efforts to resist death; our duties to those who have died; how we face our own deaths; and how we cope with the deaths of others. We also ponder questions such as: How should we feel about our own deaths? What does the fact of our mortality mean about the meaning of our lives? What happens after we die? Is it possible to become immortal?
This program involves journalling and offers daily prompts, each encouraging a new layer of exploration and reflection around living fully without the fear of death. This will provide a structured journey to delve deeper into self-understanding, mindfulness, and intentional living inspired by facing life’s transience. Additionally, this course utilizes dozens of academic texts, fiction and non-fiction literature, and journal articles - all offered at no cost, to supplement learning.
We will meet every Saturday from 10-1pm CST beginning January 3, 2025 through January 4, 2026.
